Job Overview

The Store Manager is accountable for overseeing all operational and personnel functions within a specialty retail pet store. Key responsibilities include driving exceptional sales performance through effective sales strategies, fostering team development, enhancing customer loyalty through exemplary service, and ensuring adherence to company standards. Additionally, this role is tasked with maintaining a safe and efficient work environment for all team members, customers, and vendors, as well as training staff on the proper implementation of policies and procedures.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Work assigned shifts and be flexible with hours, including nights and weekends, based on business requirements.
  • Promote a safe and efficient workplace by enforcing company policies and procedures.
  • Proactively support sales initiatives: Acknowledge the customer, engage with them and their pets, recommend products or services, and create memorable experiences.
  • Drive profitability by enhancing top-line sales, modeling a sales-oriented culture, executing merchandising strategies, managing expenses, overseeing profit/loss, and safeguarding company assets.
  • Collaborate with mall management to engage in marketing activities, including promotional materials and signage.
  • Build a strong store team through effective hiring, retention strategies, scheduling, payroll management, training, development, succession planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure accurate daily reconciliation of cash drawers and vault.
  • Lead the implementation of Petsense standards regarding store presentation, inventory management, freight handling, pricing/promotional activities, loss prevention, and compliance with procedural audits.
  • Perform a variety of essential duties daily, including handling customer complaints to ensure a positive shopping experience, executing opening and closing procedures, making bank deposits, operating the cash register, and supervising cash handling processes.

Required Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of two years in retail leadership is required. Experience in profit/loss management, scheduling, shrink control, payroll management, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling is preferred. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Regardless of educational background, candidates must be able to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic accurately.

Working Environment

  • The work environment is generally favorable, typically indoors with moderate noise levels.
  • Shift lengths may vary, generally lasting no less than 4 hours and potentially exceeding 8 hours.
  • Commitment to promoting a safe and productive environment for team members and customers while adhering to company safety protocols.
  • Work surfaces include hard flooring and outdoor areas, with adequate lighting and temperature control.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move and handle merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the store.
  • Capability to occasionally lift or reach for merchandise overhead.
  • Ability to frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, and climb ladders.
  • Capacity to navigate the store for an entire shift.
  • Ability to safely access all areas of the store, including the sales floor, stock area, and register area.
  • Proficiency in operating necessary store equipment (e.g., dolly, hand truck, computer, cash register).
  • Ability to read, write, and count accurately for documentation purposes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with team members and customers.
  • Ability to process transactions through the point-of-sale system.
  • Successful completion of training and certification for propane dispensing, if applicable.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support district operations.
  • This position requires a non-sedentary work style.
  • Team members must possess the physical and mental stamina to move throughout the store and outdoor areas efficiently and safely.
  • Ability to consistently operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers.
