Job Overview

This role is accountable for overseeing all operational and personnel aspects of a specialized retail pet establishment. Key responsibilities include driving exceptional sales performance through effective sales strategies, fostering team development, enhancing customer loyalty through superior service, and ensuring adherence to company protocols. This position also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe and efficient working environment for all team members, customers, and suppliers, alongside training staff on the proper implementation of policies and procedures.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Work assigned shifts and be adaptable to varied hours, including days, nights, and weekends as required by business demands.
  • Promote and maintain a safe and productive workplace by adhering to and enforcing established policies and procedures.
  • Proactively support sales initiatives: Acknowledge the customer, engage with them and their pets, recommend products or services, and create memorable experiences.
  • Drive revenue and profitability by enhancing top-line sales, modeling behaviors that foster a sales-oriented culture, executing merchandising strategies, managing expenses, overseeing profit/loss, and safeguarding company assets while minimizing losses.
  • Collaborate with mall management to engage in all marketing activities, including promotional materials and signage throughout the shopping center.
  • Build a strong store team through effective hiring practices, retention strategies, scheduling, payroll management, training and development, succession planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure accurate daily reconciliation of cash drawers and vaults.
  • Lead the implementation of Petsense standards through effective store presentation, inventory management, product movement, pricing and promotional activities, loss prevention, and compliance with procedural audits, as well as planning and delegating daily tasks.
  • This position requires performing a variety of duties throughout the day. Although the mix may vary, it is essential that every Store Manager can accurately, efficiently, and safely execute all of the following tasks regularly and without prior notice: Address and resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive shopping experience, perform opening and closing procedures, transport and deposit funds at the bank, operate cash registers/computers, and supervise cash handling processes.

Required Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of two years in retail leadership is essential. Experience in profit/loss management, scheduling, shrink control, payroll oversight, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling is preferred. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Regardless of educational background, candidates must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic accurately.

  • Effective communication skills with customers and team members.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and basic math.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to resolve issues ethically and with minimal conflict.
  • Time management and stress management capabilities.
  • Basic computer skills and mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to perform and execute the primary responsibilities of team members.

Working Environment

  • The work environment is generally favorable, typically indoors with moderate noise levels.
  • Work shifts may vary by store but generally last no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
  • Promote a safe and productive environment for team members and customers, adhering to company safety training and guidelines.
  • Indoor and outdoor surfaces are typically hard (concrete, asphalt, etc.), with adequate lighting and temperature.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move and handle merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the store.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or reach for merchandise overhead.
  • Ability to frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to navigate throughout the store for an entire shift.
  • Ability to safely access all areas of the store, including the sales floor, stock area, and register area.
  • Ability to operate and utilize all necessary equipment for store operations (e.g., dolly, hand truck, forklift, baler, computer, cash register). Forklift and baler operation requirements do not apply to those under 18.
  • Ability to read, write, and count accurately to complete all necessary documentation.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members and customers using strong written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to process information and merchandise through the point-of-sale system.
  • Ability to successfully complete training and certification for propane dispensing (requirements do not apply to those under 18).
  • Ability to complete all required training successfully.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support district requirements.
  • Ability to drive or operate a vehicle for business purposes.
  • This position is non-sedentary.
  • It is crucial that team members possess the physical and mental stamina to move throughout the store and outdoor areas quickly and safely.
  • Ability to consistently operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers.
