JOB SUMMARY

The Outpatient Services / PACU Nurse plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe preparation, education, and discharge of patients undergoing procedures. This position involves comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patients in outpatient settings, pre-operative and post-operative care, as well as procedural sedation. The nurse must exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients within their assigned unit.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a current Wyoming license as a Registered Professional Nurse. National perioperative certification is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in acute care or surgical services.

SKILLS

Strong understanding of perioperative and post-anesthesia care nursing principles; familiarity with aseptic techniques and infection control measures. Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations and interact positively with diverse individuals. Excellent communication skills are essential.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications are mandatory. TNCC certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire, subject to class availability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Deliver direct patient care, assess outcomes, and modify the nursing care process as necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Conduct focused assessments and reassessments across various patient demographics, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations.
  • Monitor patients' hemodynamic status and accurately interpret results.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify arrhythmias, and intervene according to ACLS and PALS protocols and physician directives.
  • Prepare patients for examinations or procedures and assist physicians as required.
  • Maintain precise and ongoing nursing documentation, including patient history, condition, vital signs, treatments, responses to interventions, and changes in status.
  • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity, acting as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Educate patients based on identified learning needs, evaluate the effectiveness of their learning, and involve families in the educational process as appropriate. Review discharge instructions with patients or responsible parties.
  • Stay updated on medications and their correct administration according to age and clinical condition. Calculate, prepare, administer, and monitor IV fluids and medication drips.
  • Perform treatments and procedures as directed, within the scope of training and capabilities.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
  • Ensure all rooms and work areas are clean, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Verify that supplies are adequately stocked and organized in appropriate locations.
  • Complete daily departmental tasks, monthly inventory checks, and compliance surveys as scheduled.
  • Communicate any questions or concerns through the appropriate channels.
  • Assist in orienting new employees to the department.
  • Supervise nursing students, providing opportunities for observation and learning.
  • Participate in mandatory in-service training, annual education days, and departmental meetings. Enhance professional development by attending educational offerings related to Perioperative Nursing.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth patient transfers.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned or requested.
