Overview

The Oncology Clinical Research Nursing Educator plays a pivotal role in the orientation, ongoing education, and professional development of clinical research nursing personnel, team members, patients, and the broader research community. This position collaborates extensively within the health network and, when relevant, with the NCI Consortium designation alongside Georgetown University.

Key Responsibilities

1. Identifies and assesses training needs through continuous evaluation and analysis.

2. Designs and develops educational programs tailored to the identified needs and organizational requirements, utilizing principles of adult learning.

3. Facilitates performance enhancement initiatives aligned with the strategic goals of the health network.

4. Integrates educational opportunities while ensuring compliance with research-related regulations and guidelines.

5. Provides specialized education to staff regarding the development, maintenance, and reporting of clinical trial findings.

6. Trains research personnel in the creation and management of research computerized provider order entry systems.

7. Evaluates the impact of educational initiatives, ensuring the application of learned skills in the workplace and their effect on staff performance in achieving departmental objectives; conducts surveys to assess team knowledge on various subjects; collaborates with compliance teams to review audit outcomes.

8. Participates in the annual review and update of staff orientation programs.

9. Coordinates comprehensive, unit-specific training programs for research team members, including essential competencies for assigned areas.

10. Monitors the completion of educational requirements and skill validations, maintaining accurate records.

11. Communicates progress and performance metrics to management as necessary.

12. Assists in the annual review of mandatory training and core competencies in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

13. Documents all educational activities, including objectives, evaluations, and attendance, while developing metrics for tracking.

14. Aids staff in organizing grand rounds and professional journal clubs as needed.

15. Collaborates in the coordination of educational programs initiated by the research institute or designated department.

16. Works with team members to enhance educational support in designated areas.

17. Partners with colleagues in other departments to address research or clinical educational needs and facilitate staff training.

18. Serves as a mentor for students, interns, or other individuals as appropriate.

19. Assesses the performance of new staff with input from preceptors.

20. Trains and coordinates research team members on various clinical competencies, including CPR, EKG administration, and phlebotomy.

21. Assists in the creation and distribution of research-related communications, including announcements and newsletter articles.

22. Aids in identifying and applying for educational funding opportunities when applicable.

23. Performs additional duties and projects as assigned. 24. Adheres to organizational competencies and standards of conduct.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.

2. Minimum of three years of clinical research experience.

3. Compliance with the standards set by the American Nurses Association.

4. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to customer service.

5. Excellent communication, organizational, presentation, documentation, and interpersonal skills.

6. Ability to work independently or collaboratively, managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

7. Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

8. Adherence to all relevant organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Training in human subject research and Good Clinical Practice (CITI Training and Certification).

2. Understanding of clinical trials and their regulatory environment.

3. Familiarity with fundamental scientific and healthcare concepts and terminology.

4. Capability to thrive in a dynamic environment while managing competing priorities.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. Valid New Jersey State Professional Registered Nurse license.

2. BLS/CPR certification from the American Heart Association, to be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

1. Certification as a Clinical Research Professional or Clinical Research Coordinator.
