Department: City Attorney's Office

Salary Range: $113,882.35 - $180,930.59

Position Overview:

This role involves advanced, autonomous legal work, providing expert counsel and support to the City of Gainesville, its utilities, Charter Officers, and various management levels, as well as citizen boards and committees. Positions in this classification report directly to the City Attorney and require handling complex legal matters independently, ensuring accountability for all work produced.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer strategic legal guidance to the City Commission and senior management, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Advise on policy changes and develop implementation strategies that align with legal requirements.
  • Engage in the negotiation and drafting of contracts and intergovernmental agreements.
  • Provide legal opinions and review internal and external directives.
  • Prepare ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents for adoption by the City Commission.
  • Represent the City in legal matters before state and federal courts.
  • Supervise and mentor junior legal staff, fostering their professional growth.
  • Assist in maintaining a well-functioning legal office and assume responsibilities of the City Attorney as needed.

Qualifications:

To excel in this position, candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate and be a member of The Florida Bar, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible legal experience. Preference will be given to those with expertise in areas such as Real Property, Environmental Law, Litigation, and Employment Law.

Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of legal principles and the ability to apply them effectively.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to draft comprehensive legal documents.
  • Proficient in analyzing complex legal issues and presenting findings clearly.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Capacity to manage multiple assignments and prioritize tasks efficiently.

Work Environment:

This position may require attendance at meetings outside of standard business hours. Candidates must be able to maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
