The Law Enforcement Officer role encompasses a variety of responsibilities related to the enforcement of Federal, State, and local regulations, safeguarding life and property, and providing public assistance.

Eligibility: This opportunity is available for both lateral and entry-level candidates. Lateral-entry candidates must be currently employed as police officers in a patrol capacity.

Entry-level applicants should be P.O.S.T.-certified or currently enrolled in a police academy. Newly hired entry-level candidates may qualify for police academy tuition reimbursement.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive:
  • Conducts patrols within the City on foot and in a police vehicle to enforce laws and ordinances, protect individuals and property; responds to complaints, crimes, disturbances, accidents, and other related situations.
  • Performs preliminary investigations; may gather physical evidence and statements necessary for reporting incidents and for follow-up investigations.
  • Appears in court to provide testimony; collaborates with attorneys on legal matters; executes arrests as required.
  • Prepares and maintains various reports, records, and logs to document daily activities and specific incidents.
  • Monitors and directs vehicular traffic and enforces traffic regulations; manages traffic accident situations; establishes and maintains roadblocks as necessary.
  • Engages with the public in various settings; e.g., provides assistance to families and individuals in distress, offers help to citizens and visitors, including providing directions and calling for roadside assistance.
  • Maintains the required level of physical fitness to perform duties effectively.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Ability to develop a working knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances; to understand proper law enforcement principles, procedures, and practices; to be familiar with first aid and medical procedures; and to know the city and surrounding areas, including streets and landmarks.
SKILL: Ability to develop proficiency in the use of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, and related equipment, as well as self-defense principles.
ABILITY: Remain composed in stressful situations; apply logical reasoning to determine appropriate actions quickly; follow written and verbal instructions; maintain a high level of physical activity; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain positive working relationships with others.
TRAINING: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be certified by Colorado POST within one (1) year of appointment.
EXPERIENCE: Requires 30 semester hours of college completed; OR two (2) years of military service with honorable discharge; OR one (1) year of experience as a sworn police officer or corrections officer in a recognized law enforcement agency; OR a combination of the above that is approved by the City's Human Resources Department or any equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, is essential for this position. Interaction with the public and colleagues is a daily requirement and necessitates the ability to direct, negotiate, and mediate. This role involves responding to service calls, emergencies, and incidents, making arrests, and ensuring community safety and order. The position requires operating a patrol vehicle, making quick and accurate decisions, and occasionally employing defensive tactics. It may also involve responding to crime scenes and significant incidents.

The working environment is representative of conditions encountered while performing essential job functions. Employees frequently work outdoors and may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high places, or with hazardous materials. Exposure to various weather conditions and potential dangers is common. The role may involve shift work, including weekends and holidays, and can be highly stressful.

The physical demands of this position require frequent sitting, talking, or hearing, with occasional standing, walking, running, and using hands for various tasks. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Employees may need to exert significant physical force to perform job duties effectively.
