Job Summary

Instructors of the Upward Bound Program at Fort Valley State University provide face-to-face and online academic support services to students in an area of expertise (Math, English, and Science). All instructors are hired in a part-time, temporary status with the possibility of continuing to teach during the Academic Year and future Summer Program components.

Three instructors will be hired to teach Science, with one instructor required to work on Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (two Saturdays a month) from October to May.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach at an appropriate instructional level face-to-face and online classes.
  • Conduct assigned classes and provide other academic support services (e.g., workshops, and development sessions with emphasis on academic achievement).
  • Assist Academic Advisors with the initial and ongoing assessments of students' academic abilities and rates of achievement.
  • Prepare appropriate course outlines and syllabuses for assigned courses.
  • Provide teacher-focused and student-focused content development, including initial focus, content emphasis, and linking, and lesson summaries.
  • Assess and encourage student progress, monitor student progress, respond to adequate and inadequate student performances, and support students.
  • Handle non-instructional tasks efficiently and use instructional time appropriately.
  • Maintain effective physical settings for instruction and maintain appropriate student behavior in the classroom.
  • Interact in a professional manner with staff, students, and parents, and enforce regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.
  • Model correct use of language, oral and written, and demonstrate accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content.
  • Maintain lesson plans as required by policy.
  • Experience teaching educationally first-generation and economically challenged students.
  • Maintain professional relationships and maintain confidentiality of students and student records.
  • Transport students to and from designated pick-up and drop-off locations (as needed).
Qualifications
  • Appropriate secondary and specific credential required (Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred).
  • Must be Highly Qualified: Science (9-12) Clear Renewable Certificate.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Certification and experience working with high school students in an academic setting.
  • Experience teaching educationally and economically challenged students in an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with standardized tests.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish positive rapport with students.
  • Ability to motivate students socially and educationally.
Working Conditions
  • Evening/night/weekend work.
  • Work on weekends.

The work requires minor physical exertion such as short periods of standing, walking long distances, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The job may require recurring lifting of lightweight objects with infrequent bending or stooping alternating with lighter activities.
