Job Summary:

The Waterbury Hospital is seeking a skilled PACU Nursing Manager to oversee the coordination and deployment of nursing resources for the Preoperative, Reed PACU, and Main PACU. This is a challenging role that requires strong leadership and clinical expertise to optimize the care delivery process and patient flow.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice
  • Develop and implement daily activity plans, ensuring timely completion and adherence to KKESH standards.
  • Assign staff based on surgical activity, staff skill-mix, educational activities, and special assignments, demonstrating continuous evaluation and modification of work plans as needed.
  • Direct and supervise clinical activities, supporting RNs in clinical decisions for nursing diagnosis and care planning for special needs and high-risk patients.
  • Review the planned operating schedule, ensuring adequate preparation of intraoperative patients and surgical requirements, and inform the Holding Area or Central Desk of any concerns and actions taken.
  • Plan patient care needs based on clinical data and assessment findings, coordinating care among the multidisciplinary team and communicating with Providers and Anesthesia staff as required.
  • Coordinate implementation of physician's orders, ensuring currency of preference cards through regular audit processes, and review utilization of equipment, instruments, and supplies, making recommendations for adjustment in support of outcomes.
  • Inform the Director or designee of unit activities, unusual events, actual and potential patient problems, and provide supporting documentation as required, coordinating shift change and unit after-hour staffing to ensure continuity of care and communication.
  • Evaluate patient care on an ongoing basis, conducting clinical practice review sessions to evaluate perioperative processes and patient care issues.
  • Document patient records informatively and completely, following standards, and review patient records for deficiencies per unit protocols.
Resource Management
  • Develop and implement staffing schedules, reflecting appropriate numbers, skill-mix, education activities, special assignments, and requests.
  • Assess staff strengths and development needs, participating in staff performance appraisal, sharing knowledge and skills, and implementing counseling and corrective action following discussion with the Director.
Performance Improvement
  • Participate in department-wide performance improvement activities, applying quality management strategies in the unit/area, initiating investigations into areas of concern, and taking action for improvement.
  • Participate in the revision of policies, procedures, and systems, participating in TJC mock surveys, collecting and reporting on unit-based and service-wide performance indicators.
  • Participate in nursing and surgical services research/data collection activities, coordinating changes to practice based on evidence-based research, and encouraging staff to continually update knowledge of current nursing/technical research and practice.
Requirements:
  • BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or Associate Degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current nursing license registration from the country of professional practice.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of current postgraduate experience in an acute care setting, three (3) years of which is in the operating room.
  • One (1) year of previous experience in a Charge Nurse, Head Nurse, or Assistant Head Nurse position, or demonstrates leadership qualities during relief Charge Nurse assignments.
  • BLS, ACLS required; PALS preferred.
  • CCRN or CAPA certification preferred.
  • Demonstrate current medical and surgical knowledge, with the ability to recognize and apply basic pathophysiology in the disease process, and possess an in-depth understanding of the nursing process and expertise in technical nursing skills.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to coordinate, supervise, and participate in clinical practice and resource management activities, implemented in a proactive and organized manner, indicating informed critical thinking skills and the ability to prioritize.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to recognize potential emergency situations, manage code blue or other emergency situations competently, and uphold the standards of the Nurses' Code of Ethics.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to assume clinical supervision of the unit.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Hospital-wide service departments and communication systems.
  • Excellent oral and written language skills.
