Position Summary:

The primary role of a Controls and Automation Specialist is to assist in the implementation and ongoing support of automated processes within our operations. This position emphasizes enhancing safety, ergonomics, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency in operational areas. The role is heavily centered on maintaining control systems and robotic solutions integrated with our production machinery, which predominantly relies on programmable logic controllers (PLC) and may also interface with various non-robotic automation equipment. The position operates under the general supervision of the Manufacturing Director, allowing for independent judgment in daily responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure equipment maintenance aligns with Sika's programs, policies, and standards.
  • Uphold a safe and organized work environment in accordance with Sika's housekeeping standards.
  • Oversee vendors and contractors to guarantee adherence to Sika's health, safety, and behavioral standards while monitoring project progress within agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Manage projects from inception to completion, including Capital Appropriation Requests (CARs), encompassing project budgets, savings, timelines, and implementation details.
  • Implement modifications to existing production processes, equipment, and facilities; engineer new processes to enhance output capacity and eliminate bottlenecks.
  • Evaluate new and existing layouts of machinery to optimize performance and recommend necessary changes.
  • Identify and conceptualize primarily mixing and packaging systems, along with other automated solutions to enhance safety, ergonomics, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency.
  • Document lessons learned and best practices to streamline future projects.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and support automated systems, including PLC-based controllers, networking solutions, and vision systems.
  • Develop procedures, documentation, and routings essential for operational processes.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively across all organizational levels, including operators, R&D, QA, supply management, and executive management.
  • Act as the technical authority on control equipment and automation, mentoring and training others in automation system technicalities.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed to support the company's automation strategy.
  • Be adaptable in working with operational staff on the floor and adjust work schedules as necessary.
  • Engage in other tasks and projects as required by the Manufacturing Director.
Qualifications:

Education: Associate's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical preferred).

Experience: 3-5 years in a manufacturing, warehouse, or distribution center environment, with direct experience in implementing, maintaining, and operating automation, PLCs, and packaging equipment.

Competencies:
  • Expertise in automation, PLCs, and robotics.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective oral and written communication abilities, alongside proficiency in computer applications.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and the capability to prepare and maintain necessary documentation.
  • Independent worker with robust organizational skills, requiring minimal supervision.
