Position Overview

The main objective of this role is to conduct modeling and simulation efforts that support the Air Force by applying engineering and scientific principles to facilitate intricate, precise, and technically sound model-based evaluations of adversarial elements, nodes, networks, and/or systems. This work is aligned with operational directives from clients, including Combatant Commands.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create data-driven models and simulations addressing operational-level systems engineering challenges to enable targeting and effects assessment of adversarial components and systems.
  • Formulate operational requirements and develop compelling, customer-centric products that are both interactive and effectively synthesize the outcomes of model-based analyses in support of the USAF.
  • Prepare and deliver supporting documentation, including analyses, models, reports, presentations, and other relevant materials to communicate and justify analytical methodologies and findings to senior military personnel.
  • Enhance existing analytical methods or develop new models, techniques, and tools to improve analytical outputs and foster long-term capability development.

  • Locations are fixed and non-negotiable.
  • This position is classified as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing program, subjecting the incumbent to random drug testing.
  • Position is subject to polygraph testing.
  • Must be deemed suitable for federal employment.
  • Must reside within the local commuting area as this is not a remote or telework role.
  • Participation in the direct deposit pay program is mandatory.
  • New hires to the Department of the Air Force must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Retired military members must adhere to specific provisions regarding appointment within 180 days of retirement.
  • Males born after must be registered for Selective Service.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the area of consideration to be eligible for this position. To qualify, candidates must fulfill the basic education and/or specialized experience requirements. Specialized Experience is defined as work in the private or public sector performing duties related to the position being filled.

For DR-I: Candidates must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples include familiarity with methods and practices supporting the development of modeling and simulation capabilities and recommendations for enhancing effectiveness and efficiency; understanding of testing or evaluation methodologies; proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or C++ for analytical problem-solving; and experience applying systems thinking concepts and quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques.

For DR-II: Candidates must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the DR-I/GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples include comprehensive knowledge of military capability testing and evaluation; application of theories, concepts, principles, methods, hardware, software, and practices related to radar systems, satellites, and/or air domain command and control networks; proficiency in programming languages including Python, R, or C++ for analytical solutions; and experience in developing empirical models or simulations to enhance capabilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of engineering methodologies to apply experimental theories and/or new applications to issues and provide technical guidance in support of radar systems, satellites, or air domain command and control networks.
  • Ability to collaborate or contribute individually across disciplines/organizational boundaries to enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of military operations in air and space domains, including radar, command and control, and sensors.
  • Capability to resolve critical technical challenges requiring innovation and careful consideration of engineering principles.
  • Ability to analyze and address routine to moderately complex problems using established methodologies and processes.
  • Skill in applying critical thinking to select, interpret, and adapt known scientific principles.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical products and briefings to diverse audiences, including military personnel at various levels, industry experts, academics, and peers.
