Assistant Professor in Exercise Science

The School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Exercise Science to begin August 16, 2025. Responsibilities- Teach quality instruction in a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Exercise Physiology, including Exercise Programming, Exercise Electrocardiography, and Fitness Management.
- Direct graduate research projects and theses.
- Develop a focused area of scholarship that culminates in nationally refereed publications and presentations.
- Participate in College, School, and Program faculty meetings and activities.
- Serve on Program, School, College, and/or University Committees and contribute to State and/or National/International professional organizations.
- Advise majors regarding general career options and professional matters.
The School of Kinesiology and Recreation is a part of the College of Applied Science and Technology at Illinois State University. We offer two undergraduate sequences in Exercise Science: Health and Human Performance and Applied Health Professions. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment that prepares students for careers in corporate, commercial, community, and clinical fitness fields, as well as strength and conditioning, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician's assistant, athletic training, nursing, and other allied health areas.
About the Exercise Physiology LaboratoryThe Exercise Physiology Laboratory is strategically located on the ground level of the School of Kinesiology and Recreation in McCormick Hall. The lab space consists of six rooms, including a metabolic lab space, a body composition room, a Hologics DXA system room, a Fit Lab, a classroom, and a general purpose/storage room. We have a range of equipment, including Cosmed Quark and K5 metabolic systems, a Vyntus metabolic system, multiple EKG systems, dedicated treadmills, a Tango blood pressure system, Styku, InBody, and Tanita scales, Bod Pod, hydrodensitometry system, Hologics DXA system, Monark cycle ergometers with Wingate software, Lange skinfold calipers, spirometer, physical activity monitors, blood lipid, lactate, and glucose analyzers.
About the Biomechanics LaboratoryThe Biomechanics Laboratory studies the forces acting on a living body and the patterns of movement caused by the forces. It provides insight to improving skill performance, understanding the process of skill development, and identifying the etiology of overuse injuries. We have an AMTI Force Platform System, technology to capture movement, electromyography to record electrical activity present in muscle, various instrumentation, and custom lab software.
About the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity Teaching/Research AreaThis space contains a lab, a conference room, and a consultation room. The lab suite is used to conduct research on the role of psychological factors in explaining human motivation, performance, learning, and physical activity. It also provides mental skills consultations to athletes. We have a range of equipment, including a golf swing analyzer, a golf hitting cage, a putting surface, and various instruments to study movement.
