The Lead Underwriting Specialist plays a pivotal role in meticulously assessing and analyzing both new and renewal business in alignment with established underwriting protocols to meet departmental objectives.

This professional exhibits a profound level of proficiency in managing agency relationships, delivering exceptional service that sets the standard for excellence.

ONSITE REQUIREMENT

This position offers a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Effectively oversees profitability by evaluating and interpreting profitability and actuarial reports. Collaborates with Loss Control and Claims departments to address any accounts that are underperforming.

Thoroughly reviews insurance applications to ensure all relevant information is accurate and complete for pricing assessment.

Engages with the Underwriting Support Specialist team to collect necessary information and reaches out to agency partners for any additional details required.

Demonstrates a solid understanding of deductible programs and loss-sensitive plans to accurately quote complex coverages, premium levels, and terms within the designated authority.

Makes timely and informed independent decisions on submission issues based on the best available information within the given authority.

Evaluates current and prospective policyholders to determine the appropriate quotation, indication, or declination of policies, ensuring profitability and new business targets are achieved.

Exhibits advanced negotiation skills to effectively manage premium costs and net rates.

Collaborates with Underwriting Support Specialists to finalize and bind agreed-upon policies. Prepares Loss Control requests for suitable accounts.

Communicates effectively with external clients and internal partners through phone, electronic correspondence, and, when appropriate, in-person meetings, fostering strong agency relationships and enhancing client retention.

Ensures that deadlines are met and timely responses are provided.

Expert in developing and nurturing agency relationships, including direct visits to agencies and policyholders. Leads sales calls with policyholders and brokers, and participates in renewal quote presentations.

Contributes to the training and development of junior team members, acting as a mentor.

Identifies and implements improvements in underwriting processes and assists in the development of underwriting tools.

Ensures compliance with company standards, training, managerial direction, and applicable regulations.



QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, preferably in Risk Management, Economics, Finance, or Business.

CERTIFICATIONS:
Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of five (5) years of underwriting experience in workers' compensation (carrier) is required.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Capable of writing detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Proficient in presenting information to management and public groups.

MATH ABILITY:
Proficient in mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Able to apply concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:
Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Capable of addressing problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS:


To excel in this role, the individual should be highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and able to quickly learn proprietary and third-party software applications. Proficiency in Power BI is preferred.
