Firefighter Job Description

As a Firefighter with the City of Pharr, you will play a crucial role in responding to urgent medical emergencies, rescuing fire victims, and ensuring their safety during critical moments. Your responsibilities will include searching for and rescuing fire victims, utilizing manual and power tools, and operating essential fire apparatus such as pumpers, aerial ladders, and ambulances.

Additionally, you will engage in fire prevention practices by conducting inspections and developing pre-fire plans for commercial and public facilities, emphasizing your commitment to safeguarding the community. This dynamic role allows you to combine technical skills with a passion for helping others, making every day a fulfilling and impactful experience.

Requirements for this Firefighter Job
  • Must possess a unique blend of physical and mental skills, including physical agility and endurance, and the ability to carry a minimum of 75 lbs. for 50 feet.
  • Should be capable of dragging, pushing, or pulling 170 lbs. for 50 feet, and maneuvering up 75 feet of stairs unassisted.
  • A good cardiovascular fitness level is essential, as the job frequently involves running, climbing, standing, kneeling, squatting, and crawling.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old and not exceed 35 years at the time of hire, with a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must hold a valid Class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety and become certified as a Basic Structure Firefighter within six months of employment.

Knowledge and skills required for the Firefighter position are:

  • Achieve a minimum passing score of seventy (70) percent on the written civil service entry examination.
  • Successfully complete the physical ability test as prescribed by the Fire Department and approved by the Commission.
  • Pass a background investigation and polygraph examination.
  • Pass oral interviews.
  • Successfully complete a post-job offer psychological examination and medical examination that includes passing a visual acuity test, and physician certification that the applicant is not dependent on and does not use illegal drugs or misuse legal drugs.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Preferably possess a certification as a basic firefighter, as established by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, or eligible to become certified at time of appointment.
