Dietitian - Clinical Nutrition Expert

Job Summary:
The Clinical Dietitian is a medical nutrition expert responsible for planning, developing, and directing all nutritional care activities for Nutrition and Food Services at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. This role involves coordinating nutritional care with other healthcare providers, the veteran, the veteran's caregiver, and the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP) to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk and/or degree of malnutrition.
- Develop and implement Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluate, and monitor the effectiveness and outcomes of MNT interventions.
- Calculate nutrient requirements and necessary diet restrictions or food and drug interactions, tailoring the diet prescription to each individual patient.
- Document MNT in the medical record using the Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring, Evaluation (ADIME) format.
- Identify patients in need of nutritional support and recommend the appropriate mode of support, communicating appropriately with the healthcare team.
- Assess educational needs and provide nutrition education/counseling for individuals and groups, tailored to the veteran(s).
- Ensure continuous improvement of safe and quality care of veterans, leading activities in the implementation of new initiatives and using data in the development of measures, data evaluation, and initiation of corrective actions.
Requirements:
- Must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
- Must be able to work in a healthcare environment, adhering to normal safety precautions and practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of various accrediting and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of virtual technology to provide nutrition care.
- Ability to apply evidence-based nutrition practices to improve patient outcomes.
- Ability to collect data for performance improvement studies.
