Job Title: Construction Inspector

Ghirardelli Associates is seeking a skilled Construction Inspector to join our team. As a Construction Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring that construction projects meet the highest standards of quality and safety.

Job Summary:

The Construction Inspector will be responsible for inspecting construction methods and workmanship to ensure that contractors build roadways, bridges, and other public works projects in accordance with plans and specifications. This position will involve working with experienced teams of professionals and may require serving as the only inspector on a construction project or assisting in overseeing construction inspection activities for large or complex projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Attend pre-construction meetings to ensure that all parties are aware of the project's requirements and expectations.
  • Prepare daily reports documenting construction activities, including contractor labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control, field measured quantities, field discussions with the contractor and public, and weather.
  • Prepare timesheets daily to record all hours worked, including vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.
  • Consult with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, and other project representatives to discuss work progress and construction problems.
  • Prepare quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments to construction contractors.
  • Coordinate field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.
  • Coordinate communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Ensure that contractors build roadways, bridges, and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitor project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards.
  • Observe and inspect ongoing construction work.
  • Perform construction record-keeping activities, recommend payments to contractors, and prepare reports.
  • Train and mentor less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Document work progress and issues arising throughout the scope of the project.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in roadway construction inspection is mandatory.
  • Strong communication, verbal, and written skills are required.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, are required.
  • Caltrans or other Public Agency experience is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and the Greenbook is required.

The associate frequently is required to use hands. Repetitive reaching, repetitive hand use. Physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements, including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, balancing, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Frequently use safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest; work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults; work outdoors or work on uneven ground or floor spaces; work at elevations above ground level and on marine vessels/structures. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and can work any day of the week, both night and day. Available for after-hour emergency response.
