Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

This role is situated within the Legal Audit Unit, contributing to the legal bill review initiative and other projects aimed at managing the expenses associated with external legal defense and coverage counsel.

The Litigation Counsel will oversee the management of litigation defense expenditures by scrutinizing invoices from defense and coverage counsel, as well as other vendors involved in the defense and coverage of environmental and mass tort claims. This review process will utilize various databases, Excel, and PDF formats to ensure adherence to Resolute Guidelines and any contractual or court-mandated obligations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate law firm invoices based on standards of reasonableness, necessity, and efficiency, ensuring compliance with company policies and cost-sharing agreements, both in paper and electronic formats.
  • Engage in regular reviews and updates of company litigation guidelines and billing review procedures to uphold industry best practices.
  • Complete tasks in alignment with established timelines and prioritization standards.
  • Assess settlement agreements, coverage agreements, and jurisdictional requirements to guarantee compliance during the billing review process.
  • Support the VP of Legal Audit in implementing and ensuring adherence to Resolute billing standards.
  • Assist in identifying litigation and billing trends, along with potential avenues for cost control.
  • Communicate the outcomes of bill reviews to law firms and claims personnel.
  • Evaluate requests for reconsideration regarding supplemental payments.
  • Collaborate with internal account managers and external co-carriers or outside counsel on joint defense group matters and audits.
  • Work alongside various business units and within Legal Audit for joint account management.
  • Negotiate and resolve billing disputes with internal claims teams and external legal firms or vendors.
  • Prepare analyses and reports on audit findings for executive review as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build relationships, make decisions, and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Strong negotiation capabilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of General Liability Litigation and insurance coverage matters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn and utilize various technologies; prior experience with electronic billing systems is advantageous.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Must be a licensed attorney in at least one state.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Litigation or Legal Audit.
