Job Summary:

The Counselor (Demonstrator II) is a key member of our team at Amity Foundation, responsible for providing group and individual sessions and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in a residential setting. This role requires a high level of empathy, patience, and effective communication skills to support students in their recovery journey.

Essential Duties:
  1. Comply with and evaluate comprehensive social, legal, and personal histories of students, interacting with family members, attorneys, probation/parole officers, and other relevant individuals or agencies.
  2. Observe, record, and evaluate changes in students' appearance, behavior, and demeanor, maintaining accurate and timely student records of sensitive nature.
  3. Prepare reporting and documentation as required by Amity Foundation and contract compliance, ensuring the confidentiality of student records.
  4. Follow up with students' daily community living progress, ensuring they receive personal necessities and are taught how to maintain a clean and inviting living environment.
  5. Develop and maintain skill in preparing, setting up, hosting Amity community seminars, gatherings, ceremonies, and other events.
  6. Collaborate with the Circle Tree community to define students' roles, acknowledge accomplishments, and teach the vision and values of the community.
  7. Participate in community building activities, faculty staffing, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health field and one year of experience in a substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility, or a combination of behavioral health education and work experience totaling a minimum of two years.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Record, or similar software.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, and a physical examination and tuberculosis test from a health professional within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • State accredited Substance Abuse Disorder Treatment (SUDT) certification or equivalent AOD counselor licenses.
  • Experience with the fundamentals of the Therapeutic Teaching Community.
  • Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of human emotions with a high level of empathy.
  • Ability to exercise empathy and understand the importance of role-reversal.
  • Demonstrates skill in patience, active listening, and interest in diverse life stories.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people.
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity under pressure generated by association with substance abuse students.
  • Demonstrates proper attitudes and techniques to residential students.
