The Mental Health Technician plays a crucial role in delivering care that aligns with the recovery model. This position operates under the supervision of a registered nurse to provide direct patient support. Responsibilities include supervising, engaging, assisting, and supporting specific age groups of psychiatric patients. The technician fosters therapeutic relationships and embodies values that enhance a positive therapeutic environment and patient experience. Additionally, the Technician aids in executing recovery plans and is accountable for routine and assigned tasks while assisting nursing staff with patient care activities.

  • Executes all responsibilities and duties as defined by the mental health unit's scope of service, ensuring that the unique needs of each patient are met.
  • Conducts safety rounds to verify the safety of patients and the environment. During these rounds, the technician observes patients' appearances and behaviors, documenting their status and reporting any abnormal findings to the registered nurse.
  • Identifies patient needs and collaborates with the treatment team to create and implement individualized care plans tailored to patient preferences.
  • Responsible for the development and facilitation of mental health technician-led groups, including documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Applies Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques to recognize and appropriately de-escalate escalating behaviors, ensuring patient and unit safety.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of care provided, facilitating the integration of information for the healthcare team to ensure quality care.
  • Effectively analyzes problems and demonstrates appropriate actions and solutions, showcasing sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Provides person-centered care by offering choices, engaging patients in the treatment process, and fostering optimism and hope. Acts as a role model in managing behaviors and de-escalating patients.
  • Responsible for managing the therapeutic environment and redirecting behaviors as necessary.
  • Keeps current with knowledge and certification requirements.

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling/Psychology, or Psychiatric-Mental Health Preferred

Minimum Work Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in psychiatric care or a healthcare-related position Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) from the American Heart Association Required upon hire
  • CPI certification within 90 days Required
  • Ukeru User Certification (UKERU_CERT) within 90 days Required
