Job Overview

The Psychiatric Care Technician plays a vital role in the implementation of care strategies grounded in the recovery model. Operating under the supervision of a registered nurse, this position focuses on delivering direct patient support. The technician is responsible for overseeing, engaging with, assisting, and providing support to specific demographics of psychiatric patients. This role is essential in fostering therapeutic relationships and embodying the values that contribute to a constructive therapeutic atmosphere and patient experience. The Technician aids in executing recovery plans and is accountable for routine and designated tasks while assisting nursing staff with patient care activities.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties
  • Execute all responsibilities and tasks as outlined by the mental health unit, ensuring that the distinct needs of each patient are met.
  • Conduct safety rounds to verify the well-being of patients and the safety of the environment. During these rounds, the technician observes patient behaviors and appearance, documenting their status and reporting any irregularities to the registered nurse.
  • Assess patient needs and collaborate with the treatment team to create and implement individualized care plans tailored to patient preferences.
  • Facilitate and lead mental health technician-led group sessions, ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Employ Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques to identify and de-escalate escalating behaviors, responding appropriately to maintain safety for both patients and the unit.
  • Maintain thorough and precise documentation of care provided, ensuring seamless integration of information for the healthcare team to uphold quality care.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills and make sound judgments in decision-making when necessary.
  • Deliver person-centered care by offering choices, engaging patients in their treatment process, and fostering a sense of optimism and hope.
  • Manage the therapeutic environment and redirect behaviors as required.
  • Stay informed with current knowledge and maintain necessary certifications.
Qualifications

Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling/Psychology, or Psychiatric-Mental Health Preferred
Experience Requirements
  • 1-3 years of experience in psychiatric care or a related healthcare position Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) from the American Heart Association Required upon hire
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification within 90 days Required
  • Ukeru User Certification (UKERU_CERT) within 90 days Required
