Position Overview

The City of Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Mechanical Compliance Inspector I. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that all mechanical systems and installations adhere to established codes and standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct thorough reviews and inspections of building plans for new constructions and renovations, ensuring compliance with relevant codes in areas such as Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, or Building.

- Provide expert technical knowledge and guidance, and issue necessary summonses when compliance issues arise.

- Verify that field construction aligns with approved plans and code requirements.

- Perform damage assessments following significant weather events and investigate code-related complaints, issuing notices of violation and stop work orders as needed.

- Occasionally testify in court regarding inspection findings.

- Utilize computer software and mobile devices for data entry and communication.

- Collaborate with contractors, architects, engineers, and building managers to address and resolve code-related concerns.

- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all project documentation and reports.

- Conduct acceptance tests and field inspections for new installations, repairs, and modifications.

- Maintain detailed records of inspections, results, and necessary corrective actions.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a solid foundation in mechanical systems, with a minimum of three years of experience in building construction, inspections, or mechanical trades. A strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in HVAC systems.

Additional Requirements

- A valid driver's license is mandatory.

- Candidates must obtain Virginia State DHCD or ICC certifications within 18 months of employment.

- Successful applicants will be required to undergo a background check.
