About This Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in enrolling pets with cancer, ensuring timely care and treatment.
  • Document comprehensive medical histories and accurately record prescription usages.
  • Obtain vital signs, collect samples, and meticulously document patient visits electronically.
  • Administer medications through various routes, under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Support radiation and chemotherapy treatments of pets, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Provide dedicated after-hours in-hospital care for select pet patients, ensuring their comfort and security.
  • Support the management and follow-up care of enrolled patients, communicating effectively with clients regarding diagnostics and procedures performed on their pets.
  • Safely restrain animals for examinations, procedures, and treatments, adhering to regulatory guidelines and safety protocols.
  • Administer anesthesia and analgesia to patients during medical and radiation oncology treatments, under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Coordinate and submit samples to external laboratories, ensuring accurate and timely test results.
  • Actively participate in clinical research initiatives, collaborating closely with medical doctors to advance veterinary care and cancer treatment.
  • Perform routine diagnostic testing utilizing common laboratory equipment, maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Participate in University mandated training, such as Radiation Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens, to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of our team and the well-being of our patients.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; two years' experience working with animals in a clinical or research setting or in a veterinary practice setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in animal handling and restraint, as well as laboratory testing and medication administration.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues.
  • Fundamental computer skills, with the ability to accurately record data and maintain records.
  • Good working knowledge of various types of equipment used in veterinary medicine, surgery, radiology, and related procedures.
  • Accuracy in preparing materials, recording data, and maintaining records of work performed.
  • Use of good judgment in the application of policy, procedures, or practices to work problems.
  • Exposure to one or more disagreeable elements or hazardous materials, such as animal odors and contact with animals which may harbor diseases.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily in a clinic environment, with occasional exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Walking, standing, bending, turning, and stooping required; lifting up to 40 pounds may be necessary.
  • Employees will be expected to request assistance with lifting or carrying animals or materials over 40 pounds.
