About the Role

The Plant Microbiology Lab Manager is a critical position at Abbott Laboratories, responsible for ensuring the highest standards of food safety and sanitation across the entire plant. This role reports directly to the Plant Quality Director and is a key member of the plant's leadership team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement holistic plant sanitation and micro programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and mitigate safety risks associated with construction and major maintenance.
  • Evaluate facility sanitary conditions, assess risk based on food safety and public health principles, and prioritize corrective actions.
  • Manage the Plant Microbiology Lab, ensuring accurate and timely testing and analysis of environmental samples.
  • Develop and implement sanitation-related training for sanitation and plant employees.
  • Ensure all safety requirements related to sanitation are met, including proper chemical storage, MSDS, PPE, and procedures.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Bacteriology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or other technical degree.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the nutrition, food, or allied industry.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory management experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a regulated FDA/GMP environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding and application of microbiological principles with in-depth foodborne pathogen knowledge.
  • Certification as a Sanitarian and Pesticide Application.
  • Knowledge of HACCP, Sanitation principles, and Food Safety Preventive Controls (FSPC).
  • Understanding of the appropriate wet cleaning and dry cleaning methodology.
  • Experience in successfully addressing environmental sanitation challenges in areas such as drains, floors, walls, roofs, and equipment.
