Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at SSM Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the ophthalmic clinic has well-trained personnel to assist physicians and care for patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist ophthalmic physicians in the exam and treatment of patients.
  • Perform testing, including lensometry, automated perimetry, basic ocular motility, keratometry, applanation tonometry, retinoscopy, and refraction refinement.
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments, including inventory and maintenance of surgical instruments in accordance with organization and OSHA standards.
  • Educate patients regarding ophthalmic procedures, including administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by the ophthalmic physician.
  • Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician.
  • Participate in teaching students as requested and act as a resource to other health care providers.
  • Order and maintain supplies for work area.
  • Assume responsibility for self-education and re-certifications.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
Requirements
  • High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.
  • Three years' experience in ophthalmic technology.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT), or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification.

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced ophthalmic clinic environment, interacting with patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
