Peer Support Specialist

The Peer Support Specialist at Center for Human Development plays a vital role in supporting individuals navigating emotional distress and extreme states. This position requires a strong understanding of mental health, trauma, and recovery principles.
Key Responsibilities- Support and Empowerment: Offer support to individuals to find their voice, identify wants, needs, goals, and dreams, and work with them to overcome challenges and barriers.
- Advocacy and Representation: Provide advocacy and support in formal and informal meetings, ensuring the voice, preferences, and strengths of the individual are acknowledged and respected.
- Community Resource Development: Partner with individuals to explore community resources and recreational activities, and connect them with natural supports and continued opportunities for peer support.
- Leadership and Facilitation: Facilitate mutual support and self-help groups, and support individuals in developing their own leadership and facilitation skills.
- Cultural Competence: Promote the learning and understanding of each person's cultural identity and choices among staff.
- Program Development: Develop activities, programs, and resources that support individuals in recovery to achieve their self-identified goals.
- Natural Support Networks: Work with individuals to develop or strengthen natural support networks outside of the human service or mental health systems.
- Direct Lived Experience: Must have direct lived experience with psychiatric diagnoses, trauma histories, homelessness, problems with substance, and/or other life-disrupting events.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, empathy for others, and demonstrated commitment to supporting those with significant needs.
- Flexibility and Teamwork: Ability to work well within a team model and independently, with flexibility and a sense of humor.
- Reliability and Confidentiality: Possess reliability and the ability to learn about and observe rules of confidentiality and ethics.
- Preferred Qualifications: Completion of the Certified Peer Specialist training and computer skills, as well as peer-based training such as Intentional Peer Support, Alternatives To Suicide, Anti-Oppression, Emotional CPR, and Hearing Voices Network Facilitator training.
