Senior Scientist

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Scientist to join our Wildfire Modeling team at Verisk Analytics. As a key member of our research and modeling department, you will play a critical role in developing, optimizing, and deploying advanced computational models that simulate fire ignition, spread, and penetration into the wildland-urban interface at meter-scale resolution for millions of scenarios.
Responsibilities- Stay up-to-date with current wildland fire research and integrate this knowledge into our existing and new wildfire models.
- Understand the principles of wildland fire models and assess sensitivity to key drivers such as fuel type and weather.
- Evaluate new climatological, wildfire fuel, and wildfire activity data and integrate it into existing models.
- Create, optimize, and run critical model code using high-performance computing principles.
- Prepare accurate and effective technical and non-technical documents describing modeling processes and results.
- Deliver presentations to coworkers, company management, and clients.
- Solid foundational knowledge of atmospheric, climatic, and/or hydrological processes and their quantification across large landscapes.
- Practical experience analyzing and interpreting large model output datasets for model evaluation and improvement.
- Mathematical and/or statistical experience and practical experience developing new models or significant new components in existing models.
- Programming skills gained through practical experience with a modern programming language.
- Ability to gather, understand, and critically analyze information from various sources.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and skills and meet project objectives and deadlines.
