Role Overview

As the Director of Research and Development, you will lead and oversee the execution of our product development strategy, ensuring that all development initiatives align with our strategic goals. Your focus will be on product launches, process enhancements, cost efficiencies, customer interactions, and ensuring that all activities are managed professionally in accordance with corporate policies regarding safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. The Director of R&D will possess a comprehensive understanding of both dry and wet product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret strategic business objectives related to product development and implement a consistent product development strategy aligned with corporate goals and sustainable revenue growth.
  • Collaborate with custom development teams to establish a cooperative pipeline that positions Solina as a market leader.
  • Assess concept reports and launch/lifecycle proposals based on consumer insights to create a sustainable innovation pipeline.
  • Exhibit entrepreneurial leadership by mentoring and developing staff.
  • Engage locally and cross-functionally to ensure knowledge sharing and transfer, enhancing product development speed, quality, and success.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with external clients.
  • Organize, prioritize, plan, execute, and document R&D project activities to meet project obligations while addressing technical challenges.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance in resolving issues related to processing, ingredients, and regulatory compliance within R&D.
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies to recommend process improvements for cost savings and product enhancement.
  • Stay informed on significant technical aspects and food flavor trends, providing leadership to the research and development team, including project planning, testing, and implementation hurdles for both new and legacy consumer products.
  • Possess a clear understanding of regulatory labeling, microbiology, and sauce formulation.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills and knowledge for successful job performance will be considered. Typical qualifications include:

  • Preferred supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.

Essential Skills

  • 5-8 years of experience in product development or a closely related field within the food industry, with direct management of large technical teams.
  • Expertise in developing both dry and wet products.
  • Experience with working sessions, plant trials, and addressing customer feedback.
  • Familiarity with provision or Gensis programs.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and innovative thinking to meet customer demands.
  • Experience in setting annual budgets, monitoring expenses, and managing the financial aspects of a technical department/group.
  • Academic background in food science with experience in product development, new technology creation, and food manufacturing, particularly for salad dressings, sauces, dips, glazes, or other oil-in-water emulsion systems.
  • Proficient in creating and delivering presentations to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly SharePoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using technical and scientific terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all contacts within and outside the company.
