About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research Software Engineer to join our team at The University of Manchester. As a key member of our research group, you will play a leading role in driving software engineering and sustainable development initiatives, focusing on FAIR and energetic computing principles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead software engineering efforts to develop and deploy high-quality software solutions for particle physics, astronomy, and other research areas.
  • Collaborate with researchers and developers to profile and improve selected software pilots, ensuring they meet FAIR principles and energetic sustainability standards.
  • Benchmark and select the most suitable hardware platforms for software deployment.
  • Develop and maintain software development best practices, including version control, release management, and workflow testing.
  • Train and mentor junior researchers and developers on software development and deployment best practices.
Requirements
  • Good BSc (Hons) or MPhys (or equivalent) in computing or scientific subject, with a preference for computer science, physics, and astronomy.
  • Proven leadership experience in software systems, with excellent software development skills in C++ and Python, and experience with different computing architectures.
  • Experience with the entire software life cycle, including development, testing, and deployment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience working in international collaborative environments.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience with Open Science and sustainable software projects.
  • Proficiency in deploying and profiling machine learning workflows.
  • Confidential data experience or experience with data formats.
  • Software training, consultancy, and experience working on multi-partner, multi-site collaborative projects.
