About the Role
  • Work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule and perform skilled tasks in the plumbing trade, assisting senior-level trades workers and performing related duties as required.
  • Under limited supervision, install, modify, maintain, and repair university plumbing, irrigation, and gas systems and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled journey-level work to diagnose defects and install, repair, and maintain piping systems and fixtures for water, sewer, or natural gas with a high degree of quality and efficiency.
  • Test, repair, and maintain cross-connection devices and pressure vessel safety devices.
  • Perform routine, recurring preventive maintenance activities without direction or oversight and within established schedules.
  • Cut, thread pipe, and make proper connections.
  • Install, repair, and replace valves, controls, traps, tanks, etc.
  • Repair and replace motors, pumps, expansion tanks, and irrigation systems.
  • Test, install, and maintain gas piping and equipment, wastewater management systems, install and/or replace fixtures, and perform work on site or in a shop.
  • Drive a vehicle to and from locations and keep it supplied with tools and materials and maintained in an orderly, clean condition.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting equipment and mechanical areas.
  • Pick up materials from suppliers when requested.
  • Inspect areas and report problems to supervisor.
  • Maintain paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, and record time.
  • Order and include materials on work orders in an expedient manner.
  • Follow established university and departmental policies and procedures, follow established safety procedures, and report accidents and problems to supervisor promptly.
  • Perform assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the plumbing trade.
  • Employee is designated as Essential Personnel and required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks, or steps.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the plumbing trade.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes.
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to analyze plumbing systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education.
  • Journeyman's license or equivalent experience.
  • Cross-connection certificate.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial plumbing work.
