Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Tax Examination Specialist to join our team at the Internal Revenue Service. As a Tax Examination Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of tax returns and accounts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to taxpayer inquiries regarding tax returns, schedules, and documentation, resolving account inquiries and advising taxpayers on enforcement actions.
  • Analyze and resolve tax processing problems, adjusting taxpayer accounts, preparing and issuing manual refunds, and performing multiple credit transfers.
  • Secure payment of delinquent taxes and filing of delinquent returns, recommending lien and/or levy action as necessary.
  • Provide technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies in IRMs, serving as a technical advisor, OJT coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal government. This experience should demonstrate your ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position.

Examples of qualifying experience include:

  • Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position.
  • Experience dealing with the public, analyzing tax or accounting issues, resolving problems, adjusting accounts, and providing information on financial issues.
  • Bookkeeping or accounting duties, working with the public, analyzing tax or accounting problems, and resolving high-conflict differences through use of established guidelines.

You may also substitute education for specialized experience as follows:

  • A Bachelor's degree or four years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
