The following are the responsibilities of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Evaluates responses to all AUR notifications that suggest modifications to income, deductions, payments, and/or taxes where the taxpayer contests the proposed changes. Assesses the validity of the taxpayers' rationale for the suggested modifications and any other issues that arise. Inputs data into the automated system to create notifications, issue revised notifications, and other correspondence. Takes necessary actions to resolve cases.
  • The examiner will have written or verbal interactions with English and Spanish-speaking taxpayers and/or their representatives in response to IRS communications regarding AUR situations. Reviews all available information and takes corrective actions, such as credit transfer requests, recalculates tax, penalties, and interest (including restricted interest), and gathers information to explain adjustments while promoting compliance to taxpayers, their POA, and third parties. May reach out to the taxpayer, POA, or third party to obtain or clarify information.
  • The examiner may manage cases through Universal Case View, perform phone duties, and access cases from other AUR locations. Additionally, the employee may be required to access IDRS using various command codes to view taxpayers' accounts regarding payments received, reviewing transaction codes to determine the status of the case, making account adjustments, and transferring calls to the appropriate area.
  • Identifies payer agent information and adheres to procedures for resolving issues.
  • Inputs data into the AUR automated system to modify tax, penalties, and interest and credit adjustments. Account actions consider prior adjustments, mathematical error corrections, and taxpayer errors not identified in original processing while managing paper or electronic cases and performing phone duties.

  • Telework Eligible Positions: Telework eligible positions do not guarantee telework. Employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements (e.g., reporting at least twice a pay period to your assigned Post of Duty (POD)) and supervisor's approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. Employees must also be within a 200-mile radius of their official assigned post-of-duty (POD) while in a telework status. As a reminder - If you are selected for a position, you are responsible for reporting to your designated POD (location) on the negotiated start date or as directed by management.
    • You will be considered for telework after at least twelve (12) months of employment with IRS. During this 12-month period, you will be expected to work in-office for the entire duration.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. (Birth certificate showing birth in the U.S; Unexpired U.S. Passport; Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization; or Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (Form FS-240))

Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Specialized Experience/ Education GS-05:

Applicants must meet one of the following: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position. This may be paid or non-paid experience. Examples of qualifying experience include experience performing a variety of miscellaneous tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information and determining corrective action on accounts, researching for missing/unclear accounting information and reviewing financial documents submitted for completeness.

OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: A Bachelor's degree or four years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Have a combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of specialized experience. Post-high school education must be from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

Specialized Experience GS-06:

Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that demonstrates the ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying experience include, experience dealing with the public analyzing tax or accounting issues. Experience resolving problems, adjusting accounts, and providing information on financial issues.

Specialized Experience GS-07:

Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies necessary for successful job performance. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include bookkeeping or accounting duties, working with the public analyzing tax or accounting problems and resolving high-conflict differences through use of established guidelines, dealing with customers in person, in writing or by telephone in a variety of situations that require solicitation of information to identify concerns and offer solutions, interpreting account information to address a variety of issues, guidelines, and past transactions.
