ABOUT THE POSITION

As we embark on this transformative journey, Symphony Space is in search of a Director of Advancement. This newly established role is vital for spearheading our campaign efforts, cultivating strong relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring the successful achievement of our objectives. We are looking for a creative, dynamic, and highly motivated individual to lead all aspects of our $45 million fundraising campaign. With a seasoned professional at the helm of our advancement initiatives, we aim to secure essential resources, broaden our outreach, and solidify Symphony Space's legacy for future generations.

In collaboration with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Director of Advancement will be an integral member of Symphony Space's senior leadership team. The primary focus will be on the capital campaign, working closely with external fundraising consultants, senior leadership, and the Board. Simultaneously, the Director will partner with the development department to craft a strategic vision for a comprehensive fundraising program that identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individual and institutional donors while enhancing our annual fundraising efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategy & Leadership
    • Contribute to the growth of Symphony Space in alignment with its mission, vision, and values as a member of the leadership team.
    • Oversee the organization's $45 million campaign for the institution's building, endowment, reserves, and program innovation.
    • Develop a strategic annual fundraising plan with diverse revenue streams from individuals, foundations, corporations, and planned giving.
    • Build a robust pipeline of board prospects in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board Chair, and Nominating & Governance Committee Chair.
  • Fundraising
    • Secure major gifts for both campaign support and annual giving.
    • Manage a robust pipeline of donors throughout the donor experience cycle.
    • Set and meet monthly and annual goals for funds raised, donor contacts, and visits.
    • Supervise the institutional giving strategy, focusing on timely, accurate, and compelling grant proposals and reports.
    • Oversee the fundraising event strategy to cultivate and engage donors and supporters.
    • Collaborate closely with the Executive Director and Senior Director of Strategy & Engagement to create inspiring fundraising campaigns, collateral, proposals, appeals, and stewardship events and materials.
    • Provide exceptional donor engagement at events, performances, and programming.
  • Team Building
    • Guide the development team in enhancing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship practices across all fundraising activities.
    • Manage the development department budget and assess ongoing progress towards departmental and organizational objectives to achieve successful outcomes.
    • Commit to the personal and professional growth of development staff members through mentorship and strategic goal deployment.

QUALIFICATIONS

A successful Director of Advancement will possess:

  • A minimum of 10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, demonstrating career advancement.
  • A deep understanding of and connections to the arts and culture philanthropic community both in New York City and nationally.
  • Experience in fundraising for a major capital campaign.
  • A proven track record of setting, achieving, and exceeding fundraising goals.
  • A strong background in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from individual, corporate, and foundational donors.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to engage with Board members, patrons, artists, and fellow staff members.
  • An ability to positively represent Symphony Space to patrons, external stakeholders, and the public.
  • An ability to think strategically, work collaboratively, and communicate plans and ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Deep knowledge of fundraising tools, including CRM, Microsoft Office software, Zoom, email marketing platforms, and mailing strategies.
  • A commitment to and passion for the arts.

SALARY/POSITION TYPE

$175,000-$200,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, FLSA exempt position. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, flexible spending plan (FSA), annuity plan, and three weeks of vacation time.
