ABOUT THE POSITION

In this pivotal moment, Symphony Space is seeking a Director of Advancement to spearhead our ambitious fundraising initiatives. This newly established role is essential for driving our campaign efforts, cultivating robust relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring the successful execution of our strategic objectives. We are looking for a dynamic and creative leader to oversee our $45 million fundraising campaign, leveraging our current momentum to secure essential resources and expand our outreach.

Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Director of Advancement will be an integral member of our senior leadership team. The primary focus will be on the capital campaign, collaborating with external fundraising consultants and senior leadership to design a comprehensive strategy for engaging individual and institutional donors while enhancing our annual fundraising efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Contribute to Symphony Space's growth in alignment with its mission and values as a member of the leadership team.
    • Oversee the organization's $45 million capital campaign, focusing on building endowment, reserves, and innovative programming.
    • Develop a strategic annual fundraising plan with diverse revenue streams from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board to build a strong pipeline of board prospects.
  • Fundraising Initiatives
    • Secure major gifts to support both the capital campaign and annual fundraising efforts.
    • Manage a comprehensive donor pipeline, ensuring engagement at all stages of the donor experience.
    • Set and achieve monthly and annual fundraising goals, including donor contacts and visits.
    • Supervise the institutional giving strategy, ensuring timely and compelling grant proposals and reports.
    • Oversee fundraising events designed to cultivate and engage donors and supporters.
    • Collaborate with senior leadership to create inspiring fundraising campaigns and materials.
    • Provide exceptional engagement for Symphony Space patrons at events and performances.
  • Team Development
    • Guide the development team in enhancing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship practices.
    • Manage the development department budget and assess progress towards departmental objectives.
    • Commit to the professional growth of development staff through mentorship and strategic goal-setting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, demonstrating career advancement.
  • Strong connections within the arts and culture philanthropic community in New York City and beyond.
  • Experience in leading major capital campaigns.
  • A proven track record of achieving and exceeding fundraising targets.
  • Expertise in cultivating and stewarding major gifts from diverse donor sources.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to engage with Board members, patrons, and staff.
  • Ability to represent Symphony Space positively to external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with strong collaborative and communication skills.
  • Proficient in fundraising tools, including CRM systems and Microsoft Office.
  • A deep commitment to and passion for the arts.

SALARY/POSITION TYPE

$175,000-$200,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, flexible spending plan, annuity plan, and vacation time.
