Role Overview:

The Chief Advancement Officer is responsible for crafting, refining, and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that ensures the ongoing viability of NYC Outward Bound Schools while promoting future development and strategic initiatives. This role involves leading exceptional philanthropic endeavors, engaging with individuals, corporations, government entities, and foundations to cultivate, solicit, and manage contributions. The Chief Advancement Officer will oversee policy formulation, database management, and team coordination, while also mentoring a small team to achieve departmental objectives and enhance their professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a multifaceted fundraising strategy that encompasses corporate partnerships, foundation relations, major individual contributions, and annual giving campaigns.
  • Design and implement efficient systems and processes for fundraising operations, marketing analytics, reporting, and gift management.
  • Establish and oversee initiatives to meet or surpass fundraising targets, including maintaining a robust donor pipeline and identifying new funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Board, and program teams to spearhead major fundraising initiatives and monitor progress towards established goals.
  • Manage detailed portfolios of major donors and prospects, creating targeted fundraising campaigns as necessary.
  • Coordinate fundraising outreach and event planning for key organizational events.
  • Identify and pursue new grant opportunities, overseeing the grant-writing process.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for funders detailing the effective use of philanthropic contributions.
  • Maintain a dynamic calendar of events and engagement activities to boost donations from existing and prospective donors.
  • Support finance and program departments in grant-related activities, including budget development and reporting.
  • Provide regular updates on fundraising progress and outcomes.
  • Draft donor communications and annual reports.
  • Build and nurture relationships with external partners to advance the organization's mission.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that attracts and retains diverse talent.
  • Recruit, mentor, and supervise staff to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
  • Monitor and enhance organizational culture and employee morale.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support to team members in alignment with the organization's mission and values.
  • Encourage collaboration and accountability across departments.
  • Exemplify the organization's core values, emphasizing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Assist organizational leaders and staff as needed.
  • Prepare presentations and reports as required.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to educational equity for BIPOC youth and a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in development or advancement within a non-profit context, with at least three years in a leadership role.
  • Proven success in institutional advancement and a track record of effective fundraising from diverse sources.
  • Experience engaging with a board of directors.
  • Proficiency in data-driven strategic planning and implementation.
  • Ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing team talent to achieve development and communication goals.
  • Innovative thinker with strong initiative and prioritization skills.
  • Detail-oriented while maintaining a focus on overarching objectives.
  • Strong independent work ethic with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in public speaking.
  • Unquestionable integrity and ethical leadership standards.
  • Proficient in digital tools, including Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Familiarity with the education sector is advantageous.
