Position Summary
We are in search of a highly motivated, adaptable, and detail-oriented Scientist to contribute to our dynamic team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Molecular Genetics Unit (MGU), Division of Intramural Research (DIR).

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Communicate essential medical, genetic, and psychosocial information, including recurrence risk assessments and family planning options, to patients and their families as necessary.
  • Conduct initial psychosocial evaluations of patients and refer them for ongoing care.
  • Act as a liaison with genetics/genetic counseling organizations, patient support groups, and other non-governmental entities focused on inherited diseases, as directed by the Task Leader.
  • Support clinical and translational research initiatives within the Branch, including reviewing relevant medical/scientific literature, organizing data, and drafting manuscripts for publication, while discussing findings with the Federal Task Leader and lab personnel as required.
  • Construct family pedigrees, reach out to family members, assist in obtaining genetic specimens, and facilitate appropriate clinical and research molecular testing.
  • Engage in ongoing clinical quality control within the laboratory, offering suggestions for the effective integration and execution of genetic services at the NIH.
  • Assist in the execution of behavioral and genetic counseling research.
  • Assess the potential implications of legislation, publications, reports, and other information on current and future genetic counseling activities, recommending suitable actions.
  • Update lab personnel on emerging genetic and genetic counseling issues and propose responses to these challenges.
  • Support the preparation and implementation of relevant research protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a clinical research environment is preferred.
  • Certification or board eligibility as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling is necessary.
  • Must be eligible for credentialing by the NIH Clinical Center.
  • Knowledge of patient privacy, privileged information, and secure handling of medical records is essential.
