Genetic Counselor Job Description

At Maryland Oncology Hematology, we are seeking a highly skilled Genetic Counselor to join our team. As a Genetic Counselor, you will play a critical role in providing genetic counseling and education to individuals with a family history of cancer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide genetic counseling to individuals with a family history of cancer, including information on risk factors, genetic concepts, and inheritance.
  • Collect medical and family history from patients through personal interviews, telephone screenings, medical records review, and conferring with clinicians.
  • Develop detailed computerized models analyzing inheritance patterns to calculate and report cancer risks for individuals and families.
  • Coordinate genetic testing, including obtaining insurance authorizations and physician referrals, and scheduling laboratory and related diagnostic testing.
  • Review information with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other clinicians, and participate in the development of treatment plans as appropriate.
  • Provide long-term follow-up of patients as necessary and assist in patient referral processes.
  • Maintain patient educational resources and literature, and may prepare and present information to community groups.
  • Liaison with patients participating in cancer genetics research studies, recruiting patients for participation in trials, obtaining informed consent, collecting participant medical history, etc.
Requirements:
  • Masters degree in Medical Genetics/Counseling, including clinical experience from an accredited genetics counseling training program.
  • Minimum five years as a practicing genetics counselor, with oncology experience preferred.
  • Board certified (or eligibility for certification) from the American Board of Genetics Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics.
