Qualifications: To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology, or evidence of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE), along with one year of full-time engineering experience.
Advancement Criteria: Progression to the Assistant Engineer role necessitates the successful completion of the traineeship and proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
Assistant Engineer Requirements: To be considered for the Assistant Engineer position, candidates must have proof of passing the NCEES FE exam and either a qualifying bachelor's degree or one year of full-time relevant engineering experience. Acceptable degrees encompass various engineering disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering, while qualifying experience involves engagement in transportation projects related to highways, bridges, and traffic management systems.
Key Responsibilities: The specific duties will vary based on the area of focus:
- Construction: Responsibilities may include evaluating contractor submissions, processing consultant estimates, and reviewing contract modifications.
- Design: Duties involve preparing plans for highway projects, executing engineering calculations, and addressing inquiries from internal departments and state agencies.
- Traffic Safety & Mobility: Tasks may include supervising Traffic Signal Crews, conducting traffic operations and safety assessments, and preparing technical correspondence.
- Transportation Maintenance - Bridge Maintenance: Responsibilities will include overseeing bridge maintenance field teams, coordinating bridge maintenance activities, and responding to transportation system emergencies.
- Transportation Maintenance - Residency 10-3: The selected candidate will act as the Permits Engineer, managing highway work permits and ensuring adherence to approved permits.
Skills Required: Candidates should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication abilities, proficiency in relevant computer applications, and the capacity to meet travel obligations associated with the role.
Emergency Response: Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the department's response efforts during emergency situations as part of the Incident Command System.
