Position Overview

This role is pivotal in fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for a varied group of swimmers. The Senior Swim Instructor is tasked with delivering swim education and supporting the operational aspects of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore Learn-to-Swim initiative, as well as guiding entry-level swim team participants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Swim Education (65%)

  • Conducts swim lessons for participants of all ages and skill levels.
  • Assists in instructing community groups participating in swim programs.
  • Observes and evaluates classes and swimmers during non-instructional periods.
  • Provides lifeguarding services during non-lesson times.

Safety Supervision (20%)

  • Ensures the safety of all patrons by monitoring swimmer activities and addressing emergencies in the aquatic environment during lessons and open swim sessions.

Team Coaching (10%)

  • Aids in the training of entry-level swim team members.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (5%)

  • Participates in staff training and engages in organizational committees.
  • Pursues ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Adheres to all YWCA Evanston/North Shore policies and procedures, including the Employee Handbook.
  • Provides support to fellow instructors and lifeguards as needed.
  • Complies with all relevant Illinois and National safety regulations.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management, which may include maintenance and cleaning duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Some high school education required.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in developing swimming skills across various levels.

Certifications: Must hold Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certifications.

Technical Skills: Intermediate proficiency with swimming equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

  • At least 4 years of experience in swim skill development.
  • Minimum of 1 year of lifeguarding experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in coaching entry-level competitive swimming.

Language Skills: Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

Technical Skills: Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to tolerate extended periods in water and varying temperatures.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to navigate the facility effectively.
  • Must be capable of operating computers and other equipment.
