Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Swim Instructor to join our team at YWCA Evanston North Shore. As a key member of our aquatic program, you will be responsible for teaching swim lessons, lifeguarding, and assisting with coaching entry-level swim team levels.

Key Responsibilities
  • Swim Instruction
    • Teach swim lessons for all ages and skill levels, promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.
    • Assist with community group swim lessons and monitor swimmer safety during non-lesson times.
    • Lifeguard during non-lesson times, ensuring the safety of patrons.
  • Lifeguarding
    • Monitor swimmer safety and prevent and respond to emergencies in the pool area.
  • Coaching
    • Assist with entry-level swim team practice, providing guidance and support to young athletes.
  • Additional Duties
    • Attend staff training and participate in agency committees, staying up-to-date on industry best practices.
    • Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
    • Understand and adhere to all YWCA Evanston North Shore procedures and policies, as well as the YWCA Employee Handbook.
    • Provide backup support to other instructors and lifeguards as needed.
    • Understand and follow all relevant Illinois and national safety procedures and policies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management, which may include maintenance and cleaning tasks.
Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education:
      • Some high school education or equivalent.
    • Experience and/or Training:
      • At least 2 years of experience developing swimming skills for all levels.
    • Licenses/Certificates:
      • Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certification.
    • Technology/Equipment:
      • Intermediate proficiency with swim equipment.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Education:
      • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Experience and/or Training:
      • At least 4 years of experience developing swim skills for all levels.
      • At least 1 year of experience in lifeguarding.
      • At least 1 year of experience assisting with coaching entry-level competitive swimming.
    • Language:
      • Bilingual Spanish.
    • Technology/Equipment:
      • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Intermittent (less than 15%), Occasional (15-45%), Frequent (50-75%), and Continuous (over 75%).
  • Tolerance of prolonged and continuous time in water, being hot or cold.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb stairs, reach with hands and arms, and reach above shoulders.
  • Occasionally required to push, pull, lift, and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the facility.
  • Must be able to operate controls for computers and other equipment.
Working Environment
  • Employee may be required to share workspace.
  • Employee will, on occasion, have meetings or work in other buildings.
