Position Overview

This role is essential in fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for a varied group of swimmers. The Senior Aquatic Instructor is tasked with delivering swim education and supporting the operational aspects of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore Learn-to-Swim initiative, as well as aiding in the early stages of the Flying Fish swim team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Swim Education (65%)

  • Conducts swim lessons tailored for individuals of all ages and skill levels.
  • Assists in guiding community groups participating in swim instruction.
  • Observes and evaluates classes and swimmers during non-instructional periods.
  • Provides lifeguarding services during non-lesson times.

Safety Monitoring (20%)

  • Ensures the safety of all patrons by vigilantly overseeing swimmer safety and effectively responding to emergencies in the aquatic environment during lessons and open swim sessions.

Coaching Support (10%)

  • Aids in the training of novice swim team members.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (5%)

  • Participates in staff training and engages in organizational committees.
  • Pursues opportunities for professional growth.
  • Complies with all YWCA Evanston/North Shore policies and procedures, including the Employee Handbook.
  • Provides backup support to fellow instructors and lifeguards as needed.
  • Adheres to all relevant safety protocols established by Illinois and national standards.
  • Undertakes other tasks as assigned by management, which may include maintenance and cleaning duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements

Education: Completion of some high school education.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years in developing swimming abilities across various levels.

Certifications: Must hold Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certifications.

Skills: Intermediate proficiency with swimming equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • At least 4 years of experience in swim skill development for all levels.
  • Minimum of one year in a lifeguarding role.
  • At least one year of experience assisting with coaching entry-level competitive swimming.

Language: Bilingual in Spanish.

Skills: Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities may include:

  • Prolonged exposure to water and varying temperatures.
  • Occasional standing, walking, climbing, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Mobility within the facility.
  • Proficiency in operating computers and related equipment.
