Fathom, a leading digital manufacturing platform, is seeking a skilled Mold Designer to join our team. As a Mold Designer, you will play a critical role in designing and developing plastic injection molds and tools for our manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop plastic injection molds and tools using SolidWorks and other CAD/CAM software.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and quality, to ensure design meets customer specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Participate in design reviews and meetings to present design options and solicit input from team members.
- Utilize customer drawings and requirements to design tooling that optimizes costs associated with tool operation and expected tool life.
- Originate ideas and incorporate them into designs to improve efficiency and quality.
- Prepare and manage final layouts of designs, assemblies, and detail drawings.
- Proactively communicate design status with production teams.
- Manage design-related issues throughout the build process.
- Advise and inform the Engineering and Quality Departments on necessary changes as appropriate.
- Prepare prints for all components with proper dimensions and distribute them to the appropriate department for manufacturing.
- Stay up-to-date with new developments in the field to incorporate innovations into the design engineering function.
- Apply CAD tools to maximize productivity in the design process.
- Follow safety requirements as outlined in the safety manual.
- Perform other special projects and duties as assigned.
- SolidWorks modeling experience preferred, but will train a motivated Mold Designer from other platforms.
- Former or current Tool room, mold maker, or CNC programmer experience is a plus but not required.
- Two-year technical/vocational degree or equivalent formal engineering education preferred but not required.
- Five years of plastic injection molding and tooling experience.
- Able to decide and model electrodes when needed for the tooling.
- Knowledge of the entire mold design process.
- Three or more years of demonstrable design of plastic injection molds.
- Thorough knowledge of design tools such as CAD/CAM or other related software.
- Comprehensive understanding of manufacturing methods and practices.
- Proficient in MS Office software applications.
