Position Overview:
The University of Virginia Library is in search of a proactive, collaborative, and exceptionally qualified individual to fulfill the role of Research Librarian for Science and Engineering.
Role Responsibilities:
As a vital member of the Social, Natural, and Engineering Sciences team, the selected candidate will act as the primary liaison to the Department of Chemistry. They will collaborate with library colleagues to enhance Science and Engineering education across various academic programs and initiatives at the University.
This position is classified as an Academic General Faculty (AGF) Assistant Librarian role within the Library track, which is tenure-ineligible.
Key Duties:
The Research Librarian will engage in outreach and communication with faculty, students, and fellows, fostering robust partnerships and identifying opportunities for collaborative efforts. Responsibilities include:
- Working alongside the collections management team and other liaisons to determine collection priorities for biology, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, and materials science & engineering.
- Recommending specific acquisitions, maintaining digital desiderata lists, and promoting newly acquired resources.
- Participating in regional and national professional organizations related to academic librarianship.
Professional Development:
The Librarian is expected to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and to embrace the evolving landscape of academic librarianship.
Collaboration:
They will work closely with faculty to engage them in collaborative initiatives with the Library and will partner with other liaison librarians to support research in emerging and interdisciplinary fields.
Digital Initiatives:
In collaboration with technology and methodology experts on the Research and Learning Services team, the Research Librarian will advocate for the Library's existing and developing digital initiatives.
Collection Development:
They will contribute to the growth of collections across all formats by identifying and communicating resource needs to the Scholarly Resources and Content Strategies team.
Innovative Thinking:
The Librarian will engage in creative thinking and research projects to promote advancements in library services.
Compensation:
The salary for this position starts at $70,000 for the Assistant Librarian rank and $76,000 for the Associate Librarian rank.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or a terminal degree in Chemistry or a related field, along with relevant academic library experience.
- Academic background in Chemistry or a related discipline.
- Commitment to promoting an equitable and inclusive workplace and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
- Strong knowledge of library research tools and techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred:
- Professional experience in a liaison or subject specialist role within an academic library.
- Familiarity with data-intensive research practices and a willingness to develop skills in this area.
- Understanding of scholarly publishing models and open educational resources (OER).
