Position Overview

K&L Gates is in search of innovative, dedicated, and skilled individuals from diverse backgrounds to enhance our team. We are currently seeking an Intellectual Property Specialist to join our Houston Office's Intellectual Property division. The ideal candidate will possess a background in Engineering or Physics, along with a minimum of three years of relevant experience, particularly in patent prosecution within the Oil and Gas sector.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will collaborate with attorneys on patent prosecution tasks, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Evaluating scientific and technical documents, including prior patent publications, to determine the viability of inventions or existing patents.
  • Composing detailed descriptions of inventions in precise legal language, forming the foundation for patents granted by various patent offices globally.
  • Preparing information disclosure statements, declarations, and other materials pertinent to patent prosecution.
  • Managing a docket of U.S. and international patent prosecutions to ensure compliance with deadlines.
  • Conducting interviews with USPTO examiners.
  • Staying informed about legal advancements in the intellectual property sector.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D.) in Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Admission to practice before the USPTO for Patent Agent candidates.
  • Experience in the oil and gas industry or related fields such as mining, industrial operations, chemical processing, or heavy equipment design.

Strong academic credentials, exceptional communication skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality client service are essential. Candidates will have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned attorneys across the Intellectual Property platform, receiving mentorship and opportunities for increased responsibility, including direct client engagement.

Compensation

The salary for this position ranges from $95,000 to $140,000 per year, with final compensation determined during the interview process based on various factors, including prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, market conditions, and the candidate's geographic location.
