Position Summary:
The Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of hematology, coagulation, routine chemistry, and immunoassay testing, ensuring the utmost accuracy in sample processing. This role encompasses critical functions such as laboratory safety, adherence to Good Documentation Practices (GDP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), specimen processing, troubleshooting, and maintaining productivity and quality metrics, while fostering effective communication with laboratory management and team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply with the laboratory's quality control policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Assist in maintaining precise inventory levels consistently.
- Review and implement all SOP and workflow updates promptly.
- Propose enhancements to workflow processes to align with best laboratory practices.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and decontamination of laboratory equipment and workspaces.
- Notify supervisors of any deviations from established performance levels in test systems.
- Ensure timely completion of work output in accordance with current metrics.
- Identify and report issues that may impact test performance or result reporting.
- Participate in proficiency testing, ensuring samples are handled as patient specimens.
- Complete all continuing education units (CEUs) required for CAP accreditation.
- Stay informed about incident reports and compliance issues by attending team meetings.
- Support additional responsibilities, including lot-to-lot verifications and document control.
- Perform basic accessioning in pre-analytical operations, ensuring compliance with patient identifier requirements.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Possession of a current state-issued license for clinical testing personnel, if required.
- A minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including either 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology or 24 semester hours in science courses, with specific coursework in chemistry and biology.
- Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program recognized by ABHES, NAACLS, or other HHS-approved organizations.
Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Adaptability to new changes and processes.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Experience:
- A minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience is required; 2-3 years is preferred, depending on state requirements.
- Thorough understanding of quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure result accuracy.
- Comprehensive knowledge of hematology, coagulation, routine chemistry, and immunoassay.
Certifications:
- Preferred certifications include ASCP, AMT, or others as mandated by state regulations.
