Job Title:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)


We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join our team at UofL Health. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will play a critical role in supporting the physician's diagnosis and treatment of patients by analyzing blood and various other body fluids.


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related science, and certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS).


Responsibilities include:

  • Performing a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various other body fluids
  • Following laboratory procedures for specimen handling, acceptability, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results
  • Monitoring, operating, and troubleshooting instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
  • Adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and all maintenance performed
  • Maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Following accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines
  • Maintaining a safe work environment and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Participating in all applicable safety training sessions
  • Successfully completing department-specific competencies
  • Identifying and reporting any safety hazards or concerns
  • Making suggestions for improvements of policies and procedures
  • Performing teaching and training duties of position to other staff and potential employees
  • Maintaining compliance with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct
  • Complying with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
