Position Overview

Murfreesboro City Schools is seeking a dedicated Full-Time Instructional Support Specialist (ISS)

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrate proficiency in both reading and writing. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The role necessitates effective collaboration with both adults and children, adherence to instructions, and the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information. Candidates should exemplify proper grammar usage and foster a positive environment that promotes safety and self-esteem among students. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential. While prior experience with children is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Basic clerical skills may also be beneficial but are not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position demands the ability to see, hear, and respond swiftly to ensure the safety and instructional needs of students. Clear articulation is necessary, along with physical stamina to remain active throughout the school day, which includes standing for extended periods, bending, light lifting, and possessing good manual dexterity. Emotional resilience is crucial for managing student behavior, and candidates must be able to tolerate common environmental factors associated with educational settings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Instructional Support Specialist will assist in various assignments that enhance the effectiveness of the educational program and the overall operation of the school.

KEY FUNCTIONS: The role encompasses a variety of tasks, which may be assigned by the principal and can change based on the school's needs. Responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting the preparation and upkeep of educational materials and activities.
  2. Providing direct instructional support (e.g., reading stories, tutoring, administering assessments, implementing teacher directives).
  3. Assisting with record maintenance.
  4. Helping students with personal physical requirements.
  5. Performing basic clerical tasks (e.g., typing, filing, data entry, operating copy machines).
  6. Utilizing audio-visual equipment (e.g., VCR, TV, recorders).
  7. Grading student assignments.
  8. Supervising large groups of students (e.g., during lunch or in common areas).
  9. Creating and maintaining bulletin boards.
  10. Providing assistance in the school office.

In addition to the essential functions outlined above, the Instructional Support Specialist may be required to perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the School Principal.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Full-time Instructional Support Specialists are contracted for a 10-month period, aligning with the school calendar. Salary and benefits are determined by the Board. Part-time positions may be available with flexible hours, contingent upon student attendance, without benefits, and hourly rates are set by the Board.
