Position Summary: The role involves laying pipes or boxes for stormwater or sanitation systems, drains, and water mains. Responsibilities may include grading trenches or culverts, positioning pipes, and sealing joints.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Verify slopes to ensure compliance with specifications using levels or lasers.
  • Cover pipes or boxes with soil or other materials.
  • Connect pipe or box segments and seal joints utilizing welding equipment, cement, or adhesive.
  • Cut pipes or boxes to specified lengths.
  • Install and maintain sanitary and stormwater sewer structures and piping systems.
  • Employ instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels for precise measurements.
  • Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines and hand tools.
  • Plan pipe routes according to written instructions or blueprints, coordinating layouts with supervisors.
  • Align and position pipes in preparation for welding or sealing.
  • Excavate trenches to required depths, either manually or by directing excavators.
  • Identify existing pipes that require repair or replacement using magnetic or radio indicators.
  • Drill holes into pipes to install auxiliary lines or devices.
  • Assist in other operations as directed by the supervisor when not engaged in primary duties.

Equipment and Materials: The position requires the use of carpenter's hand tools, various power tools, bench tools (saw, drill, grinder), concrete saws, chippers, sanders, paving breakers, and jackhammers.

Qualifications: Previous experience in underground pipe installation is advantageous, with three to six months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
