Job Title: Head of Optical Engineering

Join the Gemini Observatory team as the Head of Optical Engineering, a key role in our mission to advance astronomical research. As a senior leader, you will be responsible for the strategic direction and management of our optical engineering group, ensuring the design, construction, and maintenance of our optical systems meet the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to the optical engineering team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality optical systems and infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to optimize the productivity and cost-effectiveness of our optical systems, focusing on image quality and throughput.
  • Collaborate with program leadership and staff to ensure optical expertise is available as required, and identify opportunities for technical and process improvements.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of organization-wide optical activities, including coating, and solicit input from the NOIRLab leadership team and domain experts.
  • Manage the performance of the optical engineering team, focusing on developing competences and achieving program goals.
  • Establish and maintain regular reporting on performance, progress, and concerns to the ES director.
  • Recruit and develop a competent workforce, responding to program needs, and maintain an up-to-date optical skills matrix.
  • Manage labor and non-labor budgets, ensuring the effective use of financial resources in the optical area.
  • Identify and manage risks, maintaining a risk register up to date in the optical area.
  • Set standards for optical engineering practices and explore opportunities for standardization on tools and processes.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in optics engineering or a related field.
  • Profound experience in optical analysis, design skills, and laboratory work.
  • Ability to lead diverse teams, across a multi-site environment, to high performance and excellence.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to develop and administer effective business and operations plans, with budget responsibility.
  • Strong focus on process optimization, safe working principles, and operational excellence.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in optical engineering, optical science, or a related field.
  • Experience working at an astronomical observatory or research facility.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills.
  • Training, experience, and/or certification in project/program management.
  • Experience with systems engineering.
