POSITION SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist II is a skilled Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Surgical Technologist (ST) who operates under the guidance of a registered nurse as part of the surgical team in the Operating Room, ensuring optimal patient care throughout the perioperative process. This role requires exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Acts independently as a scrub assistant during all phases of surgical procedures.
2. Upholds strict aseptic protocols during preparation, patient draping, and throughout surgical operations.
3. Adheres to Operating Room standards for the decontamination of instruments, equipment, and room turnover.
4. Exhibits advanced expertise and knowledge while assisting in various surgical procedures within their specialty.
5. Demonstrates proficiency in supporting multiple service lines and case types beyond their primary specialty.
6. Serves as a Preceptor for training staff.
7. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of equipment to ensure safe and effective use across diverse surgical specialties.
8. Selects appropriate instruments and supplies to meet the needs of the surgical team proactively.
9. Conducts all counts with the circulating nurse in accordance with Operating Room policies.
10. Manages intraoperative medications following established Operating Room protocols.
11. Provides assistance during emergency situations as required.
12. Handles surgical specimens according to physician directives and hospital policies.
13. Fosters a collaborative work environment with colleagues to promote a positive workplace culture.
14. Aids in the positioning, moving, and transporting of patients as necessary.
15. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead, or Clinical Nursing Director.
16. Completes all mandatory continuing education to maintain certification as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
1. In-depth understanding of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
2. Fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure high-quality patient care.
3. Basic proficiency with computers, surgical instruments, and related infrastructure.
4. Essential skills to provide care to patients across various age groups.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent training through a branch of the United States Armed Forces.
2. Certification must be obtained within one year of completing the surgical technologist training program.
3. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is essential.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted areas of the Operating Room and other perioperative support environments.
2. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, blood, bodily fluids, high noise levels, radiation, and extreme temperature variations.
3. Capability to stand for extended periods.
4. Ability to wear protective lead aprons for prolonged durations.
5. Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, and surgical instruments.
