Environmental Specialist

This position is responsible for providing accurate and consistent air monitoring data to the Air Quality Bureau's Monitoring Unit. The ideal candidate will have experience with ambient air monitoring equipment, data collection and analysis, and technical skills in operation, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of such equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide accurate and complete air monitoring data by performing monthly flow verifications and maintenance, plus quarterly calibrations on all continuous analyzers in network.
- Ensure accordance with federal regulations and guidelines for air quality monitoring.
- Perform quarterly maintenance and calibrations on all gas calibration systems in network.
- Complete emergency repairs, replacement, and calibration of air monitoring equipment due to malfunction.
- Make in-person site visits weekly to ensure all equipment is working within specifications and sites maintain clean operating environments.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for record keeping of air monitoring activities and data.
- Report results of instrument adjustment/calibration/maintenance to Quality Assurance (QA) section within 3 working days.
- Stay abreast of software updates and adjunct station or channel configuration settings to allow the full utilization of the data collection software.
- Seek to expand the functionality of remote communication with ambient digital analyzers for long-range diagnostics and manual control.
- Support monitoring field staff to ensure that all activities required by federal grant conditions are accomplished.
- Encourage teamwork and innovation among field staff to promote a more efficient use of Unit resources.
- Emphasize communication with field staff on equipment and non-equipment matters to achieve positive results.
- Participate in special projects in support of Department and Bureau initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering.
- Two (2) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources.
- Valid Driver's License and current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or willingness to obtain.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. This job requires working outdoors in often inclement weather. Fieldwork requires driving long distances, climbing ladders, and working on rooftops. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
