Position Description

The Department of Nutrition within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is seeking an Associate Professor specializing in Nutritional Science and Immune Response. The ideal candidate will focus on the impact of the immune system on diet-related metabolic disorders throughout various life stages. This tenure-track position includes responsibilities within the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), emphasizing research and outreach that align with the mission of the AES.

The selected candidate is expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program in nutritional immunology, addressing significant issues regarding how dietary factors influence the immune system's effectiveness against challenges such as pathogens, microbiome interactions, and immune responses related to metabolic disorders. Teaching responsibilities will include two upper-division courses: NUT 112 'Nutrition Assessment' and NUT 105 'Nutrition through the Life Cycle', as well as a graduate course in nutrition and immunology (NUT 251) for master's and PhD students. The appointee will also contribute to curriculum development and provide guidance and mentorship to both undergraduate and graduate students. Engagement in public outreach and community programs, along with departmental and university service, is expected. Collaboration with Cooperative Extension specialists and industry partners is also encouraged.

The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in nutritional immunology across the lifespan, which may encompass research in immunometabolism and the complex relationships between diet, metabolic signaling, and immune cell activity. Relevant research areas include infectious diseases, inflammation, obesity, neurodegenerative conditions, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. The successful candidate should possess a strong background in nutritional immunology, with a focus on mechanistic or translational research that advances the field of precision nutrition and health. Research should align with departmental priorities regarding health and disease mechanisms and biomarkers, as well as the NIH Nutrition Research Strategic Plan's objectives for promoting healthy aging and reducing disease burdens in clinical contexts.

This recruitment is targeted at the assistant rank, and the successful candidate will be appointed at this level, irrespective of prior qualifications.

Initial application reviews will utilize anonymized versions of the Statement of Research Accomplishments and Interests and the Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Applications demonstrating potential based on this preliminary review will proceed to a full evaluation.
